A retired U.S. Navy S‑3 Viking aircraft was recently acquired by GRC for aircraft icing research. GESS‑2 research engineers conducted tests in the Icing Research Tunnel (IRT) using a 1/3‑scale S-3 wing model. The objective of this test was to acquire representative ice shapes on the S-3 wing panel that are expected for typical in-flight icing conditions. Because the model is a 1/3‑scale panel, proper size scaling calculations were performed for scaled test conditions in order to ensure geometrically similar scaled ice shapes in the IRT.
